So what is This dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons?

Jackson Hole is a magical place that has captured the hearts of eloping couples from all over the world. But if there is one feature that stands out and is perfect for elopements, it's the Wedding Tree. The Wedding Tree, located in Bridger-Teton National Forest, is actually comprised of two massive trees that frame the iconic Teton range and is just a short hike from Gros Venture Road.

One of the most charming aspects of this dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons is the national forest setting. Surrounded by wildflowers and lush greenery, you and your partner will feel completely immersed in nature. The tranquil atmosphere is perfect for exchanging vows and celebrating your love. Plus, with your furry friend by your side, you'll truly feel like you're part of the natural world.

But the national forest charm isn't just about aesthetics. Being in this environment also offers a sense of peace and calm, making it an ideal place to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and connect with each other.

When’s the best season to go to this dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons?

Still accessible in winter and spring with 4-wheel drive, The Wedding Tree is beautiful in every season. However, in summer you’ll be surrounded by bursts of fanning yellow wildflowers; and if you elope during fall, the surrounding aspen trees will be ablaze in shades of gold, providing unparalleled color.

However, later in the season (August-October), there is a high chance for wildfire smoke to completely obstruct your view of the mountains. This is especially apparent at The Wedding Tree site since it sits pretty far from the Teton range. Because of how portraits are exposed for people, there is a huge possibility that the Tetons won’t show up in your pictures even if you can see the mountains subtly with the naked-eye.

Our absolute favorite month in the Tetons is June. The tourist season doesn’t start to really ramp-up until the end of the month, so you’ll find an early-mid month visit quietier. On top of that, this is when the spring wildflowers are popping, the rivers and lakes are full from snow melt, and the Grand Tetons are still beautifully capped in white.

As the sun sets over the mountains, you'll be able to witness the stunning golden hour and the vibrant colors that follow. It's truly a sight to behold and one that will forever be etched in your memories

When’s the best time of day for a ceremony at This Dog Friendly Elopement Location?

After photographing multiple elopements at The Wedding Tree, including one in the morning, our favorite time for photography is at the end of the day. As the sun starts to set, the magic of light truly comes to life. This is a prime location to witness the golden hour and the burst of colors that follows. The mountains, trees, and sky seem to merge together, creating a picturesque backdrop that's perfect for your romantic pictures.

The hues of pink, orange, and purple that paint the sky during sunset provide a breathtaking view that will no doubt make your elopement feel truly magical. Plus, the natural light during the golden hour is perfect for capturing those candid, intimate moments that will forever be cherished.

After the sun sets, the Grand Tetons continue to impress with their stunning colors. As the sky fades into deeper shades of blue, the mountains take on a dramatic, almost mystical look. As you bask in the beauty of your surroundings, you'll be transported to another world, one that's filled with wonder, adventure, and love.

Pros and Cons of evening vs. morning ceremony at The Wedding Tree

As you can see from these photos, the mountains are more silhouetted due to backlight. It is worth mentioning that it was unprecedentedly windy the day these photos were taken. As a result, a lot of dust was kicked up causing a thick haze. Nonetheless, skin tones are softer, and the toning is more elegant.

In the morning, the sun hits the Tetons directly, so it’s easier to capture their detail and definition. But on the flip side, with the Grand Tetons as your backdrop, the sun will also be hitting you directly. The light will be harsh and that means harsh light on eyes and skin. To see an example of the difference, check-out Bri & Matt’s Wedding Tree morning elopement, here.

We absolutely do not recommend an afternoon ceremony here (May-September). When the light is directly above you, there will deep shadows on your eyes, and colors that should be vivid will appear washed-out when photographed.

Regardless if you chose a morning or evening ceremony at The Wedding Tree, we can take other pictures at different times and locations around the Tetons. The couple in this post left their dogs with her sister and met us before their ceremony for a hike to Phelps Lake. This gave them the opportunity to have a little adventure and take portraits closer to the mountains. And Matt and Bri, our morning Wedding Tree elopement couple, decided to take a break in the middle of the day and board their dog at a local kennel (Alta is a social pup, and this gave her time to play with other dogs). They met us later for a sunset hike to Taggart Lake.

Do you need a permit to hold a ceremony at this dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons?

Yes. The Wedding Tree requires a ceremony permit and a non-refundable service fee of $200 for all weddings and elopements, you can access that information here.

How many guests can this this dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons accommodate?

You’re allowed to have up to 100+ guests, but be aware that there is only room for 6 cars at The Wedding Tree site. There is overflow parking, but the distance may require a shuttle service. Parking along roadsides or in the grass or other vegetation is prohibited.

There are no restroom facilities. And as this is a wild place, Leave No Trace principles are to be followed. Anything brought is must be packed out. This includes garbage, flowers, snacks, etc. Chairs are not provided or permitted except under special circumstances, such as for guests who would have difficulty standing during the event (couple must provide these chairs). You may want to bring blankets for guests to sit on.

When should you reserve this dog-friendly elopement location in the Grand Tetons for your date?

The Friends of the Bridger-Teton (FBT) require your request to be made at least 30 days prior to your planned ceremony date. Request must be submitted by the couple planning to be married, and not a third party—that means you have to secure your own permit, and as much as they’d like to help, your photographer/wedding planner/family member can’t do it for you.

If you’re planning on having a large group, you should submit your request even sooner than 30 days.

Dog-Friendly Wedding Tree Permit Information

A permit gives you a 1-5 hour window to have your ceremony and take photos, which is more than enough time.

The permit also means you’re the only wedding/elopement permitted to have a ceremony in your allowed time window. However, this reservation does not mean you’ll have exclusive, private access to The Wedding Tree site. This National Forest location is always open to the public. According to FBT, “The wedding site shall remain open to other Forest visitors at all times. Interfering with the normal activities of other Forest visitors, such as closing or blocking trails, overlooks, parking areas, or public use facilities, or requesting that visitors move themselves, their vehicles, or alter their selected activities, is not allowed. Free and unrestricted access to and upon the premises must be maintained at all times.”

We can’t emphasis this enough—if you’re inviting guests/family, please tell them the above. Couples are usually knowledgable of this rule, but we’ve witnessed many times, good-intentioned guests, tell people to move, leave, and disrupt other visitors with loud music because they’re uneducated to the non-exclusive use agreement.

Visitors are generally kind and considerate—if they see a wedding, they’ll likely be respectful.

Acoustic music is allowed, as well as playing songs from a phone. But amps and staging equip are not permitted.

Other prohibitions: You can see a full list of everything that’s prohibited or permitted, including info on arbors, flowers, food, etc., here.

As you exchange your vows and share your love for each other and your pup, make sure to take some time to savor the moment and soak in the peaceful surroundings. With the Grand Tetons as your backdrop, you're sure to create unforgettable memories.
